He previously served as the senior associate dean for graduate studies for 15 years and as the acting dean of the Warner School from October 2019 through June 2020. His teaching interests also include providing students with the methodological skills needed to design and conduct studies in educational leadership and policy.Brent researches micro-level resource allocation practices, local revenues, and the cost-effective use of education dollars. He has published on these topics in many forums, including The Journal of Education Finance, Educational Policy, Leadership and Policy in Schools, Economics of Education Review, Journal of School Leadership, Journal of School Choice, Journal of School Business Management, Phi Delta Kappan, Principal, and School Business Affairs. He is also the author of Raising Money for Education (Corwin Press, 1997) and numerous book chapters. In addition, he serves on many editorial boards, including the Journal of Education Finance, School Business Affairs, Education and Urban Society, Journal of Research in Rural Education, and the International Journal of Educational Reform. Brent’s scholarly work and teaching have received several awards, including the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching and the New Scholars Award from the United States Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. Most recently, he was presented with the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s 2021 William H. Riker University Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching.Brent, who joined the Warner School’s faculty in 1997, serves as a consultant to numerous school districts and educational institutions on school finance issues. He also serves as Warner Faculty Ombudsperson for the University Ombudsman Office and the Ombuds Affiliate Network. Previously, Brent served on the board of the American Education Finance Association. He was a certified public accountant, and employed by two Big Eight accounting firms.
